A Look into the Future: What 5G and Satellite Internet Mean for Traditional Providers

In the last few years, the demand for high-speed internet has increased.

But the demand for high-speed internet was always there, so what’s new?

Well, people now want fast internet in the most remote places. As the trend of farm living, remote working, and content creation has increased, people are slowly moving out of bustling city life.

This means that while traditional internet providers are already doing great in the metropolitan areas, there is a need to do even better in the suburbs.

That’s where 5G and satellite come in as a solution. For the very first time, people are willing to not just switch to satellite internet and 5G; in fact, they are actively looking for ways to improve their experience. All they need to do is search for ‘top internet providers near me’ on Google and pick the best satellite and 5G option.

But why should you go for 5G or satellite internet service? Will these technologies take over the traditional internet types?

If you are curious about this, then keep reading. This write-up will help you address these questions in detail.

How Satellite Internet Works

Satellite internet does not require any physical infrastructure, like a traditional broadband connection. Instead, it utilizes the satellite present in space, orbiting the earth, for transmitting data between the device and the group station.

This type of internet is ideal for remote areas, suburbs, and rural places, where traditional providers fail to reach.

Since there is no cable involved in satellite internet, your device relays signals to the satellite in space, and it then sends data to the ground station. From there, it processes the data and sends the response back to the same satellite and finally back to your device.

Since the overall distance between the device and satellite is quite lengthy, it generally has higher latency. This is the reason satellite internet is usually considered slightly slower than other types of internet.

How 5G Internet Works?

5G or wireless cellular internet relies mainly on the radio frequency. These radio signals connect the devices to a network of cell towers. 5G offers decent speed, lower latency, and covers a wider range of spectrum bands, i.e., low, mid, and high-band (millimeter wave) frequencies.

To understand the overall working of 5G, you need to know about the three-spectrum bands, i.e., low band, mid band, and high band.

The low band offers coverage similar to 4G and only offers moderate speeds. Similarly, the mid band offers average speed and coverage balance. Finally, the high band delivers higher speed with low latency, but the overall range is quite shorter.

The 5G devices relay signals to 5G base stations or cell towers using a set of radio frequencies. Apart from this, 5G antennas use massive MIMO technology that helps in sending and receiving data at the same time. For the 5G home internet, a 5G gateway picks up the signals from the cell site and then converts them into Wi-Fi signals to be picked up by the device.

What is Traditional Broadband?

Apart from the satellite and 5G, there are traditional broadband options like DSL, cable, and fiber optic. These methods require proper infrastructure, like wire or optical fiber, for delivering the signals.

Here are some other common types of broadband and their working principles:

  • Cable

Cable or coaxial cable internet relies on the older television or cable TV infrastructure. It is slightly faster than DSL, offers maximum coverage, and users might experience slowdown during peak hours.

  • Fiber-Optic

This fastest and latest technology relies on glass or plastic fibers. The signals are in the form of light, so they travel faster and offer service that is more reliable.

Why Traditional Internet Falls Short in Rural Areas

Now that you know all about the traditional broadband options, you might be thinking why these options fall short in rural, remote, and suburban places.

To answer this question, here is a quick overview of some important reasons:

  • High Installation

Cable and fiber connection rely on physical infrastructure like copper wires, plastic, and glass optics. All these things require time and money for installation as well as regular maintenance.

  • Old School Technology

Cable connection relies on traditional technology, which means it’s prone to disruption and outages. Plus, many rural and remote areas still run on copper telephone lines which are not capable enough for high-speed data.

So, what is the answer?

How Satellite And 5G Internet Offer a Solution

Since 5G and satellite internet do not rely on cables, it is much easier for both these options to reach remote areas and suburbs.

  • Thanks to both these options, users can now enjoy remote work, online streaming, and gaming anywhere.
  • Since cable and fiber connections require an expensive infrastructure, most service providers do not offer these services in the wilderness, making it an unreliable place. However, with satellite and 5G, travelers can stay connected regardless of their location.
  • Both satellite and 5G offer hassle-free, quick, and easy setup, which means anyone can easily enjoy access to a decent internet connection.
  • Farmers and agricultural business owners use satellite and 5G internet to stay informed about the weather conditions.
  • Tourists can rely on satellite and 5G internet to stay connected with their loved ones and authorities at all times.

This leaves us with a question: will 5G actually replace traditional internet providers?

Well, the answer is simple. While 5G and satellite will rule the suburbs and remote areas, there is no way they can dominate the metropolitan internet market. This is mainly because both 5G and satellite are relatively expensive, slow, and less reliable.
